FORMER police commissioner Gary Griffith is claiming his electronic devices are tapped upon request by Acting Commissioner of Police McDonald Jacob
He has sent a pre-action protocol letter to Jacob on the matter.
Griffith, who is also the political leader of the National Transformation Alliance (NTA) spoke at a press conference on Tuesday where he made the claims.
He said, “Mr Jacob (Mc Donald) has stated to the media that I wasn’t being investigated, yet it is confirmed that all my mobile phones are being intercepted because of the request of Mr Jacob, who has stated that it was based on intelligence.
“I intend to take this further. Through my attorneys, we have now submitted a pre-action protocol letter to Mr Jacob and I am calling him out to show to the country what is your intelligence. You cannot use the word intelligence to invade the privacy of citizens of this country. Today it is me, tomorrow it could be you.”
In the pre-action letter, Griffith called on Jacob to state the reasons for his phones being tapped.
Should Jacob not provide those reasons, it would result in “immediate legal action” as there was a breach of privacy.
Referring to the letter Griffith said, “ In the document, it will show that at no time, were I being investigated, at no time, is there any police report of any criminal activity by myself.”
“So what is his justification?” he asked.
The former police commissioner who is again vying for the post and has been shortlisted said he became aware of the tapping only last month.
