AFTER 45-days in office, UK Prime Minister Liz Truss has resigned.

It makes her the shortest-serving prime minister in the history of Britain.

Taking over the Tory leadership in September after Boris Johnson resigned for a number of issues including the attendance of parties during a period of lockdowns for Covid-19, Truss could not have delivered on her promises.

Her MPs lost trust in after she made a series of U-turns and recognised she could not have delivered on her mandate to cut taxes and boost economic growth on which she was elected.

On Thursday, outside 10 Downing Street, Truss said, “I recognise that I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.”

She said she would remain in the post until a successor takes over as party leader.

That successor would be the first prime minister who King Charles III will appoint as head of government.

Jeremy Hunt,  appointed chancellor last week, said he will not stand in the leadership contest to be the next prime minister.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer called for a general election following Truss’s resignation speech.

Truss, as foreign secretary, had beat former Chancellor Rishi Sunak for leadership. Sunak is now the clear favourite to be the next prime minister of the UK.
