THE United National Congress (UNC) on Wednesday completed the screening of candidates for the bye-election in Debe South.
The screening committee met with potential candidates at the UNC’s headquarters in San Fernando, a release from the party stated on Thursday.
It stated that a candidate will be chosen in the coming days.
The release stated, “All nominees who offered themselves expressed their commitment and willingness to work with whoever is chosen as the candidate.
“It is also important to note that the district of Debe South has been without an elected councillor for over a year following the death of Mr Purshotam Singh. The party recognises the contributions of late councillor Singh and will continue the good work started under his tenure.”
The bye-election will be held on February 7. Nomination day is next Monday.
The release stated, “The PNM Government has only now caved in to demands to call the bye-elections due to the public pressure exerted by the Hon. Political Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar SC, MP.”
