T&T Pupils Win 4 of 6 CAPE Awards

TRINIDAD and Tobago is continuing its tradition of receiving the most number of awards in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE).

In a press release by the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) on Wednesday, CXC stated that four of the six CAPE awards were won by secondary school pupils from Trinidad and Tobago. 

The award for Most Outstanding Performance in Mathematics, which is sponsored by RM Education, was won by Joel Phillips of Hillview College. Zoë Gonsalves of St Joseph’s Convent, Port of Spain, won the award for Most Outstanding Performance in Environmental Science.

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) award for Most Outstanding Performance in Business Studies was copped by Nikeesha Nancoo of Lakshmi Girls’ Hindu College. And Jesse Rampersad of Naparima Girls’ High School won the award for Most Outstanding Performance in Natural Sciences.

The other two CAPE awards went to Jade Simmonds, of Campion College in Jamaica, who secured the top award in the field of Humanities and she will receive the Hodder Education-sponsored award for Most Outstanding Performance. Anatassia Hastings of St Elizabeth Technical High School in Jamaica is the winner of the inaugural CAPE Financial Services Studies award, sponsored by the Caribbean Association of Banks.

Also, the top overall award at CAPE went to  Samuel Haynes who also continued a long Queen’s College tradition in Guyana by securing the annual Dennis Irvine Award, for the top overall student at the CAPE level.

The outstanding students will receive their awards during a virtual Regional Top Awards Ceremony, hosted by The Virgin Islands (British), on Thursday, CXC stated.

Queen’s College of Guyana will also receive awards for both the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and CAPE School of the Year 2021.

Also on Thursday, the Ministry of Education in Trinidad and Tobago will be hosting its own award ceremony for the top eight pupils in the 2021 CAPE and CSEC examinations.

The awards ceremony will be held at 2.30 pm on Thursday at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA), Port-of-Spain.

Minister of Education Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly is expected to be in attendance.
