Scotiabank Donates $100,000 to Beetham Steel Orchestra

TO instil a sense of discipline, self-esteem and belonging in the youths of the community of Beetham, Scotiabank has donated $100,000 to the Beetham Vibrations Steel Orchestra (BVSO).

BVSO was conceptualised by the Rotary Club of Central Port-of-Spain (RCCPOS) to create a sustainable model for hope, unity, and advancement of the youth in the Beetham Gardens community.

The Rotary Club in a release stated that it was hoped that apart from enjoying the programme, those involved may gain employment in the entertainment industry.

Launched on Carnival Saturday, February 26, the BVSO comprises 22 members – both male and female – between the ages of eight and 23 years. The members are currently practising under the stewardship of Khari Codrington, of The Codrington Family Institute, and his father, Cari.

While the BVSO has instruments for up to 15 players, the RCCPOS is attempting to locate additional instruments to develop a second band so that it can comprise of a junior and senior band. 

Rotarian Susan Philip, Chairperson of the Beetham Vibrations’ Steel Band Committee said, “Our recent partnership with The Scotiabank Trinidad and Tobago Foundation is in keeping with the bank’s community investments aimed at creating economic resilience for youth, through education and life skills development programmes. The bank’s donation of $100,000 will enable the purchase of instruments, as well as the tutoring of the players.”

The Rotary Club also continues to provide financial and other support to the Beetham Community in other areas.
