This ended the 36-game unbeaten run held by Argentina and now places a bit of doubt on qualification for the next round. This run goes all way back to 2019 Copa America lost to Brazil.

This is the first time since 1990 that Argentina has lost an opening game in the world cup. They lost to Cameron by a one to zero. This is also the first time since Germany in 1958 that Argentina has lost a World Cup game after scoring first and also the first time since 1930 they have lost when leading at half time.

Saudi Arabia entered the competition at 750 to 1 outsider, making this one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history. Argentina were dominant in the first half. Lionel Messi converted a penalty in the 10th minute and went into the halftime break with the lead.

In the 48th minute, Saleh Al -Shehri surged past Cristian Romero and clipped a well-taken left foot shot into the far corner. In the 53rd minute Salem Al – Dawsari spun around, swerved and curled a wonderful effort into the top right corner. This was the goal that won the match.

In the first half, Argentina has three goals disallowed for offside- one by Messi and two by Laturo Martinez. At this stage, it seemed that Argentina would win this game convincingly. Saudi Arabia now have a chance to reach the next round of 16 as they prepare for Poland and Argentina will face Mexico in a do-or-die situation.

This is a shock to the World Cup and will set the trend that no team is safe in this competition. Argentina had 70% of the possession and 15 shots at goal with six on target. Saudi Arabia had only 30% of the ball, three shots with only two on target – the two goals. The dominance that Argentina had did not result in a win.
