Policeman Charged for Taking Money from Robbery Victim

A POLICE officer is denied bail after allegedly trying to solicit money from a robbery victim.

Police Constable Deon Ince of the Capital City Patrol Unit (CCPU) Port of Spain Division, was denied bail, when he appeared before Magistrate Maureen Baboolal- Gafoor, at the Port of Spain Fifith Magistrate’s Court, on Monday.

A release from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service on Monday stated that Ince was arrested during an intelligence-led exercise by officers of the Professional Standards Bureau (PSB), after he allegedly solicited and received a sum of money from a victim of a report of robbery with violence.

The matter was adjourned to October 23, 2023.

According to police reports, on Friday, October 6, 2023, a woman walking along Charlotte Street, Port of Spain, was robbed of a quantity of Trinidad and Tobago currency, United States of America currency, her passport and other personal items.

This incident went viral via social media. Later that day, a police officer approached the victim at the Nelson Street Housing Development Plannings, Port of Spain, and she reported to him what happened to her earlier that day. He allegedly assured her that by midnight he would get back her stolen items.

On Saturday, October 7, the officer again met with the victim and allegedly assured her that he would get back her items, but she had to reward him for his efforts and a further reward when he retrieved the items for her.

The woman made a report at the office of the Professional Standards Bureau on October 10, and WPC Pakeera was detailed to investigate the matter.

On October 11, the woman met with the officer at Independence Square, Port-of-Spain, where she allegedly handed over the sum of $1000 to the officer. He was immediately arrested by a team of officers from the Professional Standards Bureau which included ASP Francis, Cpl Joseph and WPC Pakeera. Senior Superintendent Suzette Martin and Senior Superintendent Montrichard supervised the investigations.
