VENDORS at the Caroni Bridge were instructed by police on Wednesday to move.

But Member of Parliament for St Augustine Khadija Ameen is on the scene.

Around 9am, Ameen was on site attempting to assist the crab and fruits and vegetable vendors.

Ameen told AZPNews.com that on Tuesday at around 3pm, the municipal police instructed the vendors to move and again  around 7.30am on Wednesday.

Ameen said, “Last month, the municipal police told the vendors they had to move. However, the Chairman of the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation intervened and came to an agreement in which the vendors were being allowed. This morning, an inspector from the municipal police again came and told the vendors they had to move in spite of the fact that the vendors told her they had approval from the Corporation to vend there.”

Ameen added that  eight vendors were being victimised.

“They are making an honest living, adhering to all the protocols. They are not selling prepared food. There are other similar vendors in different parts of the area but they are not harassed. Why these vendors are being told to move?” she asked.

Ameen told AZPNews.com that she will continue to monitor the situation on Wednesday even if she had to stay on site all day.

She also said that the Corporation had been seeking an alternate location for the vendors. This was confirmed by Chairman of the Corporation Kwasi Robinson who also spoke with AZPNews.com concerning the situation.
