PNM Praises New Appointments in Senate

THE People’s National Movement (PNM) praises newly elected President of the Senate Nigel de Freitas and new Senator Richie Sookhai.

In a release after their appointments on Wednesday, the PNM noted that Sookhai was the immediate past president of the Chaguanas Chamber of Industry Commerce and functions as the Managing Director of Sookhai’s Diesel Service Limited.

He is a graduate of the Florida International University from which he obtained a Bachelors degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and a Masters degree in International Business, the release stated.

It stated, “With a driving force of passion toward the development of Trinidad and Tobago, Senator Sookhai has a keen interest for the growth of infrastructural advancement and philanthropic dedication nationwide.”

De Freitas was elected as President of the Senate, following the resignation of Christine Kangaloo who has been nominated by the PNM to be the country’s next president. The Electoral College meets on Friday to vote for the country’s seventh President.

The release stated, “A son of Tobago soil and a Marine Biologist by profession, Senator The Hon. Nigel De Freitas was first appointed as a Government Senator on Wednesday 23 September 2015 where he also served as the Vice President of the Senate until March 2022.

“On March 16th 2022 Senator De Freitas was appointed as a Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands and Fisheries with the responsibility of Lands within the Ministry.

“The Hon. Senator has amassed years of operational management and technical expertise in both public and private sector and has created history by being the youngest President of the Senate as he was sworn in as the 11th President of the Senate.
