THERE is a crucial need to strengthen the relationship between the government and trade unions.

Member of Parliament for Mayaro Rushton Paray is asking citizens to recognise the importance of a collaborative alliance between State and unions in addressing the evolving challenges faced by workers and ensuring their rights and interests are protected.

Paray issued Labour Day greetings on Sunday stating that in the face of a rapidly transforming work environment, it was imperative that the government and trade unions forge a closer partnership to effectively navigate the changing dynamics.

“At the heart of this partnership lies open and enhanced communication channels,” he said.

Regular dialogues, consultations and collaboration can foster a deeper understanding of the issues faced by workers and facilitate the development of policies and regulations that address their concerns, Paray said.

He said, “Let us strive for an ongoing dialogue, one that extends beyond reactive engagements during times of conflict or negotiation, but rather is based on proactive and continuous collaboration.”

Paray also suggested that government actively involve trade unions in the policymaking process and including trade union representatives in relevant committees and task forces can ensure that workers’ perspectives were adequately represented and their rights safeguarded.

“Joint efforts between the government and trade unions are necessary to address issues such as job security, fair compensation, training and upskilling opportunities, and the protection of workers’ rights in non-traditional employment arrangements like the gig economy,” he said.
