NATIONAL Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds is being called upon to put fire tenders at the Rio Claro Fire Station.

The call comes from Member of Parliament Rushton Paray following Wednesday’s fire at Persad’s D Food King Supermarket.

Paray in a statement on Wednesday said for eight months despite several pleas, the station has been without the tenders.

“There is also an absence of other relevant equipment and supplies required for an efficient and speedy response to a fire,” he said.

Paray said Government continues to neglect the rural communities.

He said, “The damage to Persad’s Supermarket has not only affected a committed and longstanding business investor but also jeopardises the jobs of devoted workers. The cruel abandonment of rural communities is also experienced daily in the disastrous state of roads and bridges, poor water supply, lack of job opportunities, weak government services, and other major failures.”

Paray said, “I once again strongly urge Mr Hinds to outfit the Rio Claro Fire Station in the quickest possible time since another blaze could have far more disastrous results.”

On Wednesday at around noon, fire broke out at the supermarket located in the heart of the town covering a large area with smoke.

Fire tenders had to be sourced from Mayaro and Princes Town Fire Stations to out the blaze.
