No Superhero to Fight Crime in T&T

IT will not be a man wearing a Superman cape or a person thinking he’s Batman or a man holding the Captain America shield who will guide this country out of its crime storm.

This was the gist of a statement made by Acting Police Commissioner McDonald Jacob in August 2022 of this year. This acting commissioner of police clearly is a man far beyond his depth and is void of any intelligent ideas to tackle the crime crisis in Trinidad and Tobago. Surely he is not the man for the job.

The present administration is unable to take decisive, serious and diligent action to impact the crime situation in this country and at this point in time where we have had 30 murders in one week. Citizens have nowhere to turn anymore. Yet with all this bloodshed, the prime minister seems to be missing in action as this year is fast becoming the new deadliest one in our history.

Who can forget the last time the prime minister spoke on the crime crisis where he labelled it as a “public health emergency.” This was approximately four months ago, yet nothing has been done. In fact, criminals have become more shameless and grisly in their activities and it has reached a stage of total lawlessness on our streets.

With 504 murders in ten months, we have far surpassed the murder rate for the last 14 years. In 2008 it took 11 months to get to 500 murders as that year was the deadliest year in our history with approximately 550 murders. Every citizen is being affected by crime now and the minister of national security in conjunction with the acting police commissioner has no idea what to do, not a single viable crime plan. No way to tackle the issue except to leave the criminals to their own devices and turf and hope that they kill each other! Mr Minister, this is not a crime plan, it’s a plan for disaster.

We have reached a point of a new low where hearing that 14 murders occurred over a weekend is a normal weekend in T&T. Minister Hinds must take responsibility for the state of the crime crisis in T&T under his watch and do the nation a favour and resign now.

Does Minister Hinds care about the citizens at all? Does he have a caring bone in his body for the families who have lost their loved ones including their children in these latest shootings? Does he have a heart at all? What exactly has he done over the last two years to stop the raging crime crisis? He should do the nation a favour and just resign now and take McDonald Jacob with him.

It never ceases to amaze me the lengths that politicians are often willing to go to get into or stay in government without the care or concern for the people that voted them into that position.

Please, Mr Minister, have a heart and do us a favour and resign and let’s put someone else in the position that can make a diligent and unceasing effort to make Trinidad and Tobago safe again instead of playing games with people’s lives. Our dead brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, our children, our husbands and our wives call out for justice now.
