Persad-Bissessar said Emancipation Day will forever hold profound significance in  Trinidad and Tobago’s history, marking the day when the shackles of slavery were broken and the spirits of  African ancestors soared free.

She said, “Today, we come together to celebrate hard-won freedom and reflect on the journey that has brought us this far. It is a moment of remembrance as well, to honour the resilience and courage of those who fought for liberty and justice, paving the way for a brighter future for generations to come.”

The battles still to be fought are against social inequality, economic disparities, poverty, crime and many others.

Emancipation pointed citizens  in the right direction, Persad-Bissessar said.

“Let us be inspired by the spirit of our ancestors, they never gave up their quest for freedom. Let their legacy be a guiding light, urging us to unite as one people, regardless of our differences, so we can together create a Trinidad and Tobago that upholds the pillars of fairness, inclusivity, and progress and opportunities for all,” she encouraged attendees.

Persad-Bissessar said united, citizens can build a country which cherishes diversity, embraces knowledge, and fosters an environment where everyone can thrive and have a good quality of life, empowering youths with education and opportunities.
