POINTE-A-PIERRE MP Davis Lee is calling for Trinidad and Tobago to stand up as the United National Congress (UNC) Opposition is doing.

In a press release on Thursday, Lee said there were no “voices” about “Nelson-gate” compared to the Section 34 fiasco. In that matter,  the then Kamla Persad-Bissessar-led government had to repeal a piece of legislation and fire a sitting minister.

The MP stated, “Even more important, it is a call for the country and citizens to pay greater attention to the Opposition and ignore the calls of those who dismiss our positions because they don’t agree with them.

“Day after day Opposition Members of Parliament are fighting for the real issues which pose a danger to our country, from the Budget against the poor to this political witch hunt.

“The Opposition is standing for the country, but the country must also stand up.”

Lee praised Persad-Bissessar saying she was the “nation’s major determined defence” against the Government intent on derailing the Constitution.

He said, “”The Leader of the Opposition must be commended for her strength of purpose to protect the laws of this nation because in October 2021, despite being chastised for raising these concerns by the then Attorney General, she persisted to write the Attorney General of the United Kingdom on this matter given the serious allegations.

“The evidence in the public domain within the last few days shows the Member of Parliament for Siparia did nothing but act in the nation’s best interest.”

State witness Vincent Nelson, KC, refused to give testimony against  former UNC attorney general Anand Ramlogan and former senator Gerald Ramdeen. Nelson is claiming that former attorney general Faris Al-Rawi had breached an indemnity agreement and is seeking damages in the High Court for more than $120 million. He said he will not testify until this matter is settled. Nelson is the State’s main witness in the bribery case against Ramlogan and Ramdeen. This case has been discontinued. Persad-Bissessar has dubbed this Nelson-Gate.
