LEADER of the Opposition Kamla Persad-Bissessar is calling for more police patrols at mosques during the holy month of Ramadan.
In a message on Monday as the Muslim community’s prepares for the month of Ramadan, Persad-Bissessar said, “Given the fact that Ramadan is observed predominantly by Muslims gathering at night in our nation’s numerous mosques for several hours of prayer and Iftar, I make a special call to the police authorities to ensure that devotees are safe to engage in their religious observances. I look forward to increased police patrols in the vicinity of mosques across the nation during Ramadan.”
Persad-Bissessar extended her best wishes to the Muslim community. She acknowledges the sacred observance of Ramadan, a period of reflection, fasting, prayer, and charitable giving. Ramadan is expected to start on Tuesday.
Persad-Bissessar encouraged citizens, regardless of their religious affiliations, to join in prayer and fasting during this auspicious month. She believes that the self-discipline and sacrifice demonstrated by the Muslim community are not only for personal growth but also serve as gifts to humanity.
Reflecting on the teachings of Ramadan, Persad-Bissessar referred to the importance of self-discipline and sacrifice, urging citizens to unite for the betterment of the nation’s future.
Th opposition leader acknowledged the challenges faced globally, particularly the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. Persad-Bissessar said, “The ongoing bloody conflict between Israel and Palestine, marked by destructive Israeli military attacks in the Gaza Strip have led to the deaths of about 30,800 and counting, as of this weekend.
It has also left 85% of Gaza’s population internally displaced, with shortages of food, clean water, and medicine. I have called on the Government of Trinidad and Tobago to use our current United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) leadership to demand a stop to the decimation of Palestine.”
