THE water issues faced by residents of the Mayaro region cannot be immediately solved but the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) is working towards having long term solutions.

This is according to Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzales.

On Wednesday, Member of Parliament for Mayaro Rushton Paray lamented that many residents would be without water for the Divali holiday.

He had asked for truck-borne water by Thursday for those most in need.

Gonzales told AZPNews.com that he was informed that WASA was making adjustments to facilitate pipe-borne supply between Wednesday and Thursday and will continue to liaise with relevant personnel.

He said areas identified by the MP received water last week and the areas identified receive on a rotational basis one in nine days.

Gonzales said, “I have been in contact with the area manager early this morning on the water supply situation in the Mayaro area. There has no known water disruption in this area and communities on the extremities in that, they have been getting as per their schedule. The MP has direct access to me and we have been collaborating on strategies to improve access to water in the Mayaro area.”

He said several wells were brought back into production that are now producing over 300,000 more gallons of water at the Mayaro Water Treatment Plant.

The San Pedro Booster Station was also rehabilitated.

“We continue to work towards addressing this 20-year-old problem,” Gonzales said.

Gonzales told AZPNews.com, “WASA is very active in the Mayaro community. We are working towards changing over some of the high leakage lines and getting localised sources of water. The MP for the area is fully aware of all these initiatives. It’s a medium to long term solution and I am confident that with the direction we are going, the water issues in these areas will be addressed.”
