ALTHOUGH members of the First Wave Movement were sprayed with tear gas and some arrested on Sunday for gathering at the Queen’s Park Savannah (QPS), they will return on Saturday.

Leader of the Movement Umar Abdullah issued a notification to the media stating that the group wrote to Acting Commissioner of Police Mc Donald Jacob, informing him of  the event scheduled to begin at 2 pm.

Abdullah who was arrested and charged on Sunday and subsequently released, requested police presence to ensure that all health protocols are observed. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd and Jacob said that that gathering did not have police permission. He said the march on Sunday was against mandatory Covid-19 vaccination and the failing health care system in Trinidad and Tobago.

The letter was hand-delivered to the Police Administration Building, Port-of-Spain on Tuesday, Abdullah said.

Copies were also sent to acting Supt Sampooran Kissoonlal, Northern Division and Insp Renee Bain-Keller at the St Claire Police Station where most persons previously arrested have been detained.

The event is titled “The World-Wide Rally for Freedom” and is also expected to take place in 40 countries around the world.

The letter stated all persons will be wearing a mask and there will be safe social distancing between spaces.

Abdullah wrote, “We want to engage our leaders and encourage them to do what is right by the people. We want to indicate to the population that peaceful demonstration and dialogue can make all the difference.

“There is no need for violence. We recognise the need for strong convictions and a strong desire to stop these mandates of experimental injections, safe zones and segregations by bridging the gap between the people and the leaders. We want to replace the hardships associated with government’s policy with a promise of a better tomorrow.”
