THE Equal Opportunity Tribunal says that attorney Veera Bhajan has been working as a lay assessor.

This was stated in a release on Wednesday after Bhajan, who was born without hands, received her letters of appointment for a second three-year term as a lay assessor from President Christine Kangaloo on Tuesday.

The release also mentioned a Trinidad Express article on Wednesday titled: “Bhajan back at EOT post but legal tussle goes on.”

The article claims that “while Bhajan took the oath of office and received her instrument of appointment at President’s House, on Monday, she will still not be able to sit as a lay assessor on the EOT until her legal matter is completed.”

The EOT stated, “Contrary to this claim made in the article, Lay Assessor Ms Veera Bhajan has been sitting on matters at the Equal Opportunity Tribunal during her tenure, notwithstanding that there is a legal matter before the Appeal Court.

“The article incorrectly states that Lay Assessor Ms. Bhajan was unable to take up her appointment, suggesting she was prevented from taking up her position. This misinformation has confused and may undermine the reputation of the Equal Opportunity Tribunal.

“It is important to clarify that Lay Assessor Ms. Bhajan has been actively engaged in her role and she has been receiving her entitlements in accordance with the terms and conditions of her appointment.”
