Counselling for Murdered Prison Officer’s Daughter

THE six-year-old daughter who witnessed the murder of her father Prison Officer Nigel Jones will be extremely traumatised and in need of counselling.

This is according to  Minister of Social Development and Family Services Donna Cox who along with members of the Ministry’s Family Service Division is expected to visit the daughter and other relatives soon. The visit to the family on Wednesday has been postponed, the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services stated in a release.

On Monday, Jones was shot dead with his daughter as a witness.

Speaking in the Senate on Tuesday, Cox said, “Grief counselling is absolutely necessary.”

She said her ministry also will also be working closely with the Children’s Authority and the Victim and Witness Support Unit of the Police Service, to provide further support to the family.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Minister of National Security Fitzgerald Hinds also offered condolences to Jones’ family as well as to the relatives of the other prison officers who were also killed recently.

Hinds said he could not begin to fathom what the child was going through and that the incident may be one, she may never recover from.
