18 Held by Police Over Weekend

EIGHTEEN persons were arrested and one firearm and quantities of ammunition and narcotics have been seized by police officers during several exercises.

The anti-crime and road traffic exercises were conducted between Saturday night and Sunday morning, a release from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) stated.

The Operation Wheels exercises were conducted between 12 midnight and 3 am on Sunday and coordinated by Snr Supt Smith, Supts Carthy and Rampath, ASP Jaikaran and Insps Philip and Lewis.

The exercises included officers of the Southern Division Task Force (SDTF), Emergency Response Patrol-South, Princes Town Traffic Unit, Highway Patrol Task Force, San Fernando Police Station, San Fernando Criminal Investigations Department, Court and Process Branch, Stolen Vehicles Unit and the Tableland Police Station.

During the exercises, special emphasis was placed on frequently stolen motor vehicles such as Aquas, Tiidas, Axios, H100, Kia K2700 and AD Wagons and seven persons, ages 19 to 62, were arrested for various offences including failing a breathalyser test and firearm related offences. 

A total of 23 fixed penalty notices were issued during the exercises. 

In a separate exercise conducted between 7.40 am and 6 pm, on Saturday, Task Force officers arrested two men for possession of a quantity of marijuana, a knife, use of obscene language, disorderly behaviour and resisting arrest. 

Work by officers of the SD Operations Unit with the assistance of the SDTF, resulted in the arrest of nine persons, ages 19 to 69, during an intelligence-led anti-crime exercise targeting house-breaking and drug-related offenders, during which one revolver and quantities of cocaine, marijuana and ammunition were found and seized.
