ELEVEN persons under the age of 18 have died a Covid-19 related death, two of whom were not yet one year old.
There are also seven children currently warded at hospital with Covid-19, with one receiving care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The latest paediatric death occurred yesterday when an infant boy was among the 22 deaths reported.
On Saturday at the Ministry of Health’s virtual media conference, both Principal Medical Officer Dr Maryam Abdool-Richards and Epidemiologist Dr Avery Hinds revealed some information on the paediatric cases in the parallel healthcare system.
Dr Hinds said while they do not have information on which variant may have been detected but given that the Omicron variant was still fairly new, the Delta variant would have been more prevalent.
He said, “The individuals would have had various comorbidities, some of them from birth. In the ones that were under a year, those comorbidities would have been present from birth or things that may have affected pregnancy leading to the birth.”
Dr Hinds who did not reveal the types of comorbidities added that was as much information that could be shared without breaching patient confidentiality.
