JORGE Vilda, the coach that took Spain to victory in the Women’s World Cup, has been fired.
This is in the wake of the scandal over the president of Spain’s football federation Luis Rubiales kissing forward Jenni Hermoso who said it was not consensual.
Vilda has been an avid support of Rubiales who refused to resign but has been provisionally suspended by Fifa, football’s world governing body.
In a statement, Spanish federation the RFEF did not give a specific reason for Vilda’s dismissal.
It stated that he had been “a promoter of the values of respect and sportsmanship in football”.
Vilda was seen applauding Rubiales at the RFEF’s extraordinary general assembly last month when Rubiales repeatedly insisted he would not resign and said he would offer Vilda a new deal.
The coach had been in charge of the national team since 2015 and even survived a player “revolt” in September 2022.
Vilda oversaw 108 matches as Spain coach. He won 75 and reached the European Championship quarter-finals in 2017 and 2022. (BBC)
