ATTORNEY Kamini Omah-Maharajh-Gopeesingh, the wife of former education minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh, has died.

She was ailing for a short while, passed away at a Miami hospital on Friday morning

Following is a statement issued by the family:

“Beloved wife of Dr Tim Gopeesingh for 46 years, dedicated and loving aunt, sister, cousin and in-law, and daughter of the late President-General of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha, Dr Deonarayan Omah-Maharajh and Mrs Shyamdevi Omah-Maharajh.

“A highly accomplished woman and truly beautiful soul, Kamini’s great, inspiring life was devoted to her family, and to helping people through her practice of law.

“Kamini graduated from the first graduating class of the Hugh Wooding Law School, Trinidad and Tobago, in 1975. At that time, there were less than 10 female attorneys in Trinidad and Tobago.

“Two years later, in 1977, in a pioneering, groundbreaking move, Kamini went on to co-found her own Port of Spain-based law firm — Gopeesingh, Martineau, Edwards and Co — with her close friend and classmate at Hugh Wooding, Ynolde Martineau, the wife of former Attorney General Russell Martineau, QC, and Tobago-born attorney Glenda Edwards.

“This was the first, and, for a number of years thereafter, only law firm founded and operated by exclusively women attorneys in Trinidad and Tobago.

“The firm participated in civil matters, and were instructing attorneys to a number of Senior Counsels in several high profile court matters over the 30 plus years that they were in operation.

“A brilliant legal mind, Kamini quickly distinguished herself as one of the top civil attorneys in the country, and was highly respected in the legal profession for her very impressive legal acumen and skill. She was also loved and admired by her peers, colleagues and clients.

“Kamini Gopeesingh will be greatly missed, for she was a woman who inspired many and touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

“Om Sagdati.

“Details of her funeral service will be announced in due time.”
