THE 16,000 plus Venezuelans who underwent the registration process in 2019 may get an additional six months legal stay in Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has announced.
Dr Rowley during a post-Cabinet press conference on Thursday, said as the VISA duration for the Venezuelans expires on December 31, Cabinet will consider extending the validity of the documentation for another six months.
However, there will be firmer restrictions and penalties to decrease illegal migration and human trafficking that has now become a main topic within national security circles, the Prime Minister added.
Before the expiry date, more information will provided, he said and Venezuelans will be required to re-register.
Dr Rowley said, “During that period, we will ramp up what we are doing with them. They will re-register. One of the things we cannot expect and which we won’t do is mass deportation. If you have people staying here and encouraging illegals to come here, then you are in the head of the line to go back home.
“On the other hand, if you have been settled here and you are deemed to be a contributor and you are not involved in illicit activities and so on, especially if you have skills, then we like other countries, we look at that in a certain way.”
He added that Trinidad and Tobago will continue to assist citizens of the troubled country as much as possible but “we cannot be giving rights to people that our citizens do not have.”

Los más de 16.000 Venezolanos que se sometieron al proceso de registro en el 2019 pueden obtener una estadía legal adicional de seis meses en Trinidad y Tobago, anunció el Primer Ministro, el Dr Keith Rowley.
Durante una conferencia de prensa posterior al Gabinete el jueves, El Dr Rowley dijo que como la duración de la VISA para los Venezolanos vence el 31 de Diciembre, el Gabinete considerará extender la validez de la documentación por otros seis meses.
Sin embargo, habrá restricciones y sanciones más estrictas para disminuir la migración ilegal y la trata de personas, que ahora se ha convertido en un tema principal dentro de los círculos de seguridad nacional, agregó el Primer Ministro.
Antes de la fecha de vencimiento, se proporcionará más información, dijo y los Venezolanos deberán volver a registrarse.
El Dr Rowley dijo: “Durante ese período, intensificaremos lo que estamos haciendo con ellos. Se volverán a registrar. Una de las cosas que no podemos tener a la expectativa y que no haremos es la deportación masiva. Si hay gente que esta aquí y anima a los ilegales a venir, entonces está en la cabeza de la fila para volver a casa.
“Por otro lado, si se ha establecido aquí y se le considera un contribuyente y no está involucrado en actividades ilícitas, etc., especialmente si tiene habilidades, entonces nosotros cómo otros países, miraremos eso de cierta manera.”
Agregó que Trinidad y Tobago continuará ayudando a los ciudadanos del país en problemas tanto como sea posible, pero “no podemos estar dando derechos a personas que nuestros ciudadanos no tienen”.
