MEMBERS of the Venezuelan migrant population, as well as youth who may be at risk, will benefit from the distribution of 200 electronic tablets.
The United Nations (UN) International Organisation for Migration (IOM) issued a press release on Monday stating that the official ceremony to hand over to the various organisations and schools took place on December 30, 2021.
The IOM Port-of-Spain Office distributed 200 electronic tablets to selected schools, government agencies and non-governmental organisations, who have been working to narrow the digital divide for pupils.
The IOM stated that it expected that the devices would benefit youth from local at-risk communities and within the Venezuelan migrant community by facilitating and enhancing virtual educational opportunities. Representatives from the Catholic Commission for Social Justice (CCSJ), the Office of Law Enforcement Policy (OLEP) of the Ministry of National Security, and the TTV Solidarity Network (TTVSOLNET) were present at the UN House to receive the devices.
Five identified schools and two homes would also benefit from this donation. The initiative was funded by the US Department of State Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM).
Speaking at the distribution ceremony, US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Shante Moore, said that education, like so many other aspects of life under Covid-19, has changed dramatically.
He said it was important that all children, whether local or a Venezuelan migrant, have access to remote education and that local and migrant children having access to education was a priority for the US Government.
He said, “It’s important that all of our children, whether they are Venezuelan refugees or Trinbagonian children, have the opportunity to study, to make sure they have all access to educational tools”.
Moore thanked the Embassy’s partners at UNHCR, UNICEF, Living Water Community and TTVSOLNET for providing “this invaluable service”.
Jewel Ali from the IOM’s Office recalled in March 2021, there was a round of consultations with Government, NGOs and other local partners on what they saw as priorities for the next three years.
She said, “When we discussed education, it came up there is still quite a digital divide and students are still not accessing virtual learning platforms.”
The initiative began earlier this year with the distribution of 160 tablets.
“We certainly hope to continue investing not just in tablets but any other supporting devices, possibly internet access, and even things beyond education but that supports it such as mental health and psychosocial support,” Ali said.
OLEP Director Gale Charles described the donation as a “godsend” for the organisation’s work to assist the vulnerable in the East Port-of-Spain community.
He said, “We would have done programmes face-to-face prior, and were wondering how we were going to get to those persons. This was sent by God. Everything just fell into place. And so we are indeed thankful for this gift.”
Other recipients also expressed their gratitude.

Tabletas electrónicas para migrantes Venezolanos
MIEMBROS de la población migrante venezolana, así como jóvenes en riesgo, pronto se beneficiarán de la distribución de 200 tabletas electrónicas.
La Organización Internacional para las Migraciones (OIM) de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) emitió este lunes un comunicado de prensa en el que indica que el 30 de diciembre de 2021 se llevó a cabo la ceremonia oficial de entrega a las distintas organizaciones y escuelas.
La Oficina de la OIM en Puerto España distribuyó 200 tabletas electrónicas a escuelas seleccionadas, agencias gubernamentales y organizaciones no gubernamentales, que han estado trabajando para reducir la brecha digital para los alumnos.
La OIM afirmó que esperaba que los dispositivos beneficiaran a los jóvenes de las comunidades locales en riesgo y dentro de la comunidad migrante venezolana al facilitar y mejorar las oportunidades educativas virtuales. Representantes de la Comisión Católica para la Justicia Social (CCSJ), la Oficina de Política de Aplicación de la Ley (OLEP) del Ministerio de Seguridad Nacional y la Red de Solidaridad TTV (TTVSOLNET) estuvieron presentes en la Casa de la ONU para recibir los dispositivos. Cinco escuelas identificadas y dos hogares también se beneficiarían de esta donación. La iniciativa fue financiada por la Oficina de Población, Refugiados y Migración (PRM) del Departamento de Estado de EE. UU.
Hablando en la ceremonia de distribución, la Encargada de Negocios de la Embajada de los Estados Unidos, Shante Moore, dijo que la educación, como muchos otros aspectos de la vida bajo Covid-19, ha cambiado drásticamente.
Dijo que era importante que todos los niños, ya sean locales o migrantes venezolanos, tengan acceso a la educación remota y que los niños locales y migrantes tener acceso a la educación era una prioridad para el gobierno de Estados Unidos. Dijo: “Es importante que todos nuestros niños, ya sean refugiados venezolanos o niños de Trinidad y Tobago, tengan la oportunidad de estudiar, para asegurarse de que tengan todo el acceso a las herramientas educativas”. Moore agradeció a los socios de la Embajada en ACNUR, UNICEF, Living Water Community y TTVSOLNET por brindar “este servicio invaluable”.
Jewel Ali, de la Oficina de la OIM, recordó que en marzo de 2021, hubo una ronda de consultas con el gobierno, las ONG y otros socios locales sobre lo que vieron como prioridades para los próximos tres años. Ella dijo: “Cuando hablamos de educación, surgió que todavía hay una gran brecha digital y los estudiantes todavía no acceden a las plataformas virtuales de aprendizaje”.
La iniciativa comenzó a principios de este año con la distribución de 160 comprimidos. “Ciertamente esperamos seguir invirtiendo no solo en tabletas, sino en cualquier otro dispositivo de apoyo, posiblemente acceso a Internet e incluso en cosas más allá de la educación, pero que la respalden, como la salud mental y el apoyo psicosocial”, dijo Ali.
El director de OLEP, Gale Charles, describió la donación como un “regalo del cielo” para el trabajo de la organización para ayudar a los vulnerables en la comunidad del este de Puerto España. Dijo: “Habríamos hecho programas cara a cara antes y nos preguntábamos cómo íbamos a llegar a esas personas.
