Tropical Wave on Friday Night

A TROPICAL wave is expected to pass over Trinidad and Tobago by Friday night.

This is the latest information coming from the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) on the adverse weather alert – yellow level that was issued on Tuesday.

The alert has been extended till Saturday at 3 pm.

In an updated issuance at 4.10 pm on Wednesday, the TTMS stated that the Intertropical Convergence Zone was expected to drift over the country on Wednesday night followed by the Tropical Wave on Friday.

Periods of rain and/or showers of varying intensities are expected, with a high (80%) chance of heavy showers and thunderstorms that can produce intense rainfall in excess of 50mm.

Gusty winds in excess of 55 km/h may be experienced especially in the vicinity of heavy showers/thunderstorms, TTMS stated.

Since Tuesday, the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government have reported several incidents as a result of the inclement weather.

On Tuesday, four floods were reported, three in the Diego Martin Regional Corporation (DMRC) and one in the Port-of-Spain City Corporation.

There were 12 landslides reported with half from the DMRC. There were two reports of fallen trees and one report of a roof damage also in DMRC.

On Wednesday, there were no reports of flooding according to the ministry’s report but there were three landslides, two in the San Juan Laventille Regional Corporation and one in the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation.

There was also one report of a fallen tree in Sangre Grande.

The ministry stated, “Recent inclement weather has resulted in reported incidents in areas across Trinidad. All reported incidents will be sent to relevant authorities for assessment and dispatching relief.”

Affected communities are urged to call relevant Disaster Management Units (DMUs).
