IN two contrasting games we had lots of excitement. Columbia were undone by the referee assist and Ecuador squandered a two goal lead.

In one of the most exciting games of the Copa, a draw was the best result. This is the type of game we love to see- one team with a two goal advantage and then the other fighting back to equalise.

In the 23rd minute Renato Tapia scored an own goal and Angelo Preciado doubled the lead in the 48th minute. At half time it seemed that Peru were out of the game.

They rallied strongly in the second half to equalise with goals from Gianluca Lapadula (49th) and AndreCarillo (54th). The game was even and Ecuador did not want a draw and searched for the winner. It never came.

Ecuador had 58% of the possession with 16 shots at goal and six on target. Peru had only seven shots at goal and four were on target but it led to two goals. Ecuador had 13 corners and Peru amazingly had none for the entire game.

Brazil win with referee assist

Brazil 2 vs Columbia 1

Olympic Stadium

I predicted a Brazilian win but the manner of the win is a sour one for football fans. Firstly, the referee had an incredible ten minutes of added on time to take the game to 100 minutes and before assisted the Brazilian winner. The ball clearly hit the referee and instead of stopping the game and allowing a bounce ball, he allowed play to continue. This led to Brazil’s equaliser.

The Colombians were shocked and protested with the referee in the middle of the pitch after Brazil’s first goal. This caused the ten minutes of added on time.

In the tenth minute Luis Diaz shocked Brazil and the entire tournament when Columbia took the lead with a goal of the tournament. I will recommend that you look at that goal- it was amazing. Brazil looked shocked and were very flat for the first half. They were creating chances but there was no venom in their play.

In the second half Brazil improved. Overall they dominated play with 70% of the possession and had 15 shots at goal with only four on target. Columbia had only three shots of which two were on target. Brazil did not deserve three points.

Roberto Firmino scored in the 78th minute was allowed to stand and Carlos Casemiro 100th minute strike sealed the game.
