ENGLAND and Holland are lucky as Qatar become the first team to be eliminated while Senegal register their first points.

In a day of disappointment for World Cup fans because of the boring matches that resulted in two of the bigger footballing nations going flat like a soft drink exposed to the air for a few hours.

England 0 vs USA 0

In a match that England were lucky not to lose and maintain an unbeaten record at the Al Bayt Stadium where they were outplayed by the USA. The speed presented by the USA was too much for England to overcome and at times England played like they were afraid of the USA. England are still in charge of their own destiny and will have to win the next game to top the group but it has presented a lifeline to the USA.

The USA like England are unbeaten in this World Cup. Christian Pulisic rattled the crossbar with a ferocious shot in the middle of the first half. Harry Kane had a golden opportunity to win the game with a clear header but failed to deliver in the final seconds. This leaves Iran in second place and Wales more than likely out.

Iran 2 vs Wales 0

In the most exciting game of the day with 31 shots at goal, 21 from Iran and six on target it was the only one that provided some true entertainment. Iran scored two goals in the stoppage time against a ten-man Wales. Roozbeh Chesmi and Ramin Rezaeian scored in the 98th and 101st minute to grab all the points. This presents a real chance to progress with even a draw against the USA. Iran had recovered from the loss to England and showed that they are here to get into the next round.

Qatar 1 vs Senegal 3

Qatar scored their first world cup goal in the 78th minute and this was their only piece of history in addition to hosting the tournament. They were outplayed and outgunned by Senegal. Qatar are out! Mohammed Muntari wrote his name into the record books and the history of Qatar football with a terrific header. In an open game, both sides were looking for the win. Boulaye Bia (41st), Famara Deidhou (48th) and Bamba Deing (84th) secured the victory for Senegal.

Holland 1 vs Ecuador 1

In probably the worst game of the day, the much-touted Holland were very disappointing. Ener Valencia (49th) was at again as he slaved a point for Ecuador. This was his third goal of the tournament and has scored all of Ecuador’s goals so far in the tournament. Cody Gakpo placed Holland in front as early as the sixth minute and it seemed we were in for an exciting match. This was never to be as Holland went very flat and all the fizz left after that goal.
