A prison officer from Chaguanas was shot and killed on Friday evening.
Acting prison officer II, Sherwin Francis, 48, of Endeavour Road, Chaguanas was at his home around 6 p.m. with his wife when the shooting occurred.
Police reports are that his wife, a business operator assistant, heard the door bell rang. Upon opening the front door, she observed three men who appeared to be of African descent, dark in complexion, all clad in dark coloured clothing with masks on their faces. One of the men who were closest to her appeared to be wearing a flat top hat, short pants and a black T-shirt asked to see her husband.
She then closed the door and called out to Francis who went outside to where the men were. She then heard him cry out and several loud explosions were heard.
Francis then ran into the house and went upstairs. His wife also ran out the back door to seek refuge at a neighbour’s house. She later returned to her house with other neighbours and found her husband standing in the living room of the house nursing wounds about the body.
He was taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility by a neighbor. Upon arrival, he was medically examined, however he succumbed to his injuries at 6.48 p.m. A post mortem is expected to be carried out at the Forensic Science Centre on Monday.
Found at the scene were 22 spent 9mm shells, seven projectiles, five metal fragments and one magazine with 15 9mm ammunition.
Further enquires revealed that shortly after the shooting, three men fitting the description of the suspects were seen running east along Fosso Bianco Avenue and escaping in a silver coloured Nissan Navara.
