HE may stray away from his normal policing duties occasionally but one police officer has certainly won the hearts of four mothers in the past eight months.

On Tuesday, PC Darion Thomas, a motorcycle cop of the Sangre Grande Traffic Section, assisted in clearing the way for a fellow officer in childbirth to reach to the hospital on time.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) hailed out PC Thomas on its Facebook page on Wednesday and gave a brief account of what occurred this week.

WPC Cherrelle Thom, 34, was rescued by PC Thomas, after being stuck in gridlock traffic along the Eastern Main Road, Valencia.

WPC Thom, who was nine months pregnant at the time, went into labour and was experiencing severe pain. Her father, who was the driver, immediately contacted police and units were dispatched.

“There was a lot of traffic on the road as I started to get contractions,” she recalled.

“Then came this motorcycle police officer, who I later learned was PC Thomas, in what I could only describe as being nothing short of a divine intervention. I really want to thank him for his quick response and action in assisting us to get through traffic safely to the Sangre Grande General Hospital,” Thom said.

The motorcycle cop, who moments before was conducting a traffic duty in the district, responded to the distress call, where upon arriving at the location, observed the driver of a SUV proceeding East along the roadway flashing his headlights and beckoning him.

He immediately instructed the driver to put on the high beam and hazard and escorted them straight to the hospital where she was taken into the emergency room where she gave birth to beautiful, healthy, nine pound baby girl, Charleigh.

“I just wanna say thanks to PC Thomas for being there, words can’t explain how grateful I am. That day was one of the most hectic, stressful days of my life but PC Thomas was just in place to take us through the traffic and safely to the Sangre Grande General Hospital. He is truly a Godsent,” WPC Thom said.

WPC Thom, who is attached to the Oropune Gardens Police Youth Club, revealed, “This was my first encounter with this officer and since then, he has been consistent with his level of service. He even was there for the registration process at the hospital as well. He is consistently checking up on us and ensuring our welfare since that day.”

PC Thomas also said, “I am grateful to God for the opportunity again to be at the right place at the right time. I will do it again in a heartbeat. It’s all part of my duty, really.”

He continued, “What I am really excited and love from this all is that no matter the current challenges, I still get to have a positive impact on the lives of those I serve within my community.”

This was the fourth time, PC Thomas was assisting a mother about to give birth. And in similar posts, they all expressed gratitude and relief describing the police officer as “Godsent.”
