PRIME Minister Dr Keith Rowley says there was no mandatory vaccination programme in Trinidad and Tobago.

Speaking at his conference in Tobago on Friday, he made reference to the protest on Tuesday. He said, “There were people who do not like to see the Government encourage vaccination to protect the wider  community because that might run counter to the point of view of who might be a minority.”

Regarding the reopening beaches in T&T, Dr Rowley confirmed that he was not worried about the beach itself.

He said, “However, we were afraid  of the congregation and the partying around the beaches.”

Dr Rowley said, “As people come to the beaches, part of the experience was some element of gathering in and around the beaches. We now know that we cannot rely on the population to treat the virus with the respect that  it deserves, it was dangerous and one life lost was  one too many.”

He said that the beaches would be reopened at the first opportunity for the whole day or part of it.

Dr Rowley said, “However, just as we were about to think we could increase the risk package, then came the Omicron and the warning which came with it was dire.”
