THE Progressive Empowerment Party (PEP) will field candidates in ten out of the 14 regional corporations up for grabs in the August 14, 2023, Local Government Elections (LGE).
This was revealed by Political Leader of the PEP Phillip Edward Alexander in an interview with AZP News on Wednesday.
“Together the PEP will fight in ten corporations and our partners in the other four,” he said.
At a press conference last week Wednesday, the PEP and the Re-United Farmers Alliance announced that they will be fighting all 141 seats in the LGE.
They formed their coalition after Political Leader of the United National Congress (UNC) Kamla Persad-Bissessar called opposition groups to come together to fight the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM).
At a Monday Night Forum on June 12, she said, “The UNC is the only national party who would welcome them and say let us work together. We have done it before, we have brought disparate groups to come together to form a mighty force to unseat and remove this wicked PNM Government and tonight I make an appeal, let us all unite and come together to remove the wicked Rowley Government.”
Asked about this unity call, Alexander replied, “We have no interest at all, we are going forward, we have a plan.”
He said PEP will not have any rally like the PNM and UNC to announce their candidates on Sunday, a day before nomination day.
Alexander said, “We will use Sunday as a day of reflection, preparation and prayer.”
Political Leader of the Re-United Farmers Davica Thomas said they were in the middle of finalising candidates and will get back to AZP News shortly.
At the press conference on June 14, Alexander said PEP had 35,000 members and Thomas said the Re-United Farmers has 72,000.
