A NATIONAL hero of the highest order, whose legacy will continue to inspire generations has been lost with the passing of former prime minister Basdeo Panday.

Additionally, he was a monumental figure in Caribbean leadership, whose presence was akin to the few stalwarts of resilience, vision, and charisma that have graced  the region.

In paying his tribute to the former politician, founder and leader of the United National Congress (UNC), Member of Parliament for Mayaro Rushton Paray said Panday stood as a tenacious advocate for social justice, economic fairness, and the enhancement of life in post-colonial Trinidad and Tobago, extending his influence across the Caribbean.

Paray said, “He deeply valued our nation’s rich diversity, steadfast in the belief that its thoughtful and equitable management was key to unlocking the potential within each individual, thereby nurturing collective success and sustainable prosperity.”

The nation’s fifth prime minister played a key role in evolving the nation’s history and his dynamic and determined leadership has been instrumental in shaping the modern landscape of Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean, Paray said.

Paray’s sentiments were also shared by MP for Chaguanas West Dinesh Rambally.

Panday’s contributions to Trinidad and Tobago were immeasurable, the MP said having been an inspiration to many including him, recalling a personal encounter with Panday, one that shaped the course of Rambally’s life in terms of pursuing law and eventually committing to public service.

Rambally’s wife also has very colourful memories of growing up under his watchful eyes.

Rambally said, “He possessed the unique ability to engage in intellectual discourse with leaders and jurists whilst maintaining a charismatic humility to engage in playful games with the youngest in the crowd with his signature smile and wit.”

He encouraged, “In this time of mourning, let us remember and celebrate the legacy of a man who devoted his life to the service of our nation. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his family find strength and solace in the memories of his impactful and distinguished life.”
