Orange Alert: 36 Reports of Flooding

TRINIDAD and Tobago is now under an Orange Level Weather Alert.

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) upgraded the weather alert at 3.51 pm on Thursday.

The alert that initially came into effect on Tuesday is extended till Saturday at 3 pm.

The TTMS stated that the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) continues to affect the country with a Tropical Wave also expected on Friday.

“Prolonged periods of rain and intense showers are expected overnight into tomorrow morning with a high (80%) chance of thunderstorm activity. Rainfall in excess of 75mm can result,” TTMS stated.

Flooding across Trinidad 

There were 36 reports of flooding across Trinidad on Thursday according to the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government summary incident report.

The majority occurred in the Penal Debe Regional Corporation with 14 followed by the San Fernando City Corporation with 11.

Seven landslides also occurred and there were four reports of fallen trees.

There was one report of roof damage in the Princes Town Regional Corporation.

The ministry stated that with the upgraded Orange level weather alert, all agencies were on board to co-operate and lend assistance if needed.

It further advised that high tide was at 5.26 pm which would result in delayed water run-off.

And in a river advisory alert at 2.30 pm, the Caroni River (EL Carmen) was at 80% capacity and the North Oropuoche River in Toco stood at 71% capacity.
