Democratic Front: No Candidate in Local, but Eyes General Elections

CITIZENS seem to have forgotten that both the major leading political parties – the People’s National Movement (PNM) and the United National Congress (UNC) – have disappointed again and again.

They will continue to do so as long as they remain in control, says the political leader of the Democratic Front Anthony Williams.

Williams did not vote in Monday’s local government election (LGE) because he felt that the choices available to him were not worthy of his red-stained finger.

The Democratic Front, a Point Fortin based political party, did not offer any candidates to contest the LGE.

In a media release on Monday, Williams said he will be not interested in any talks of coalition or support with additional political parties since all previous talks have failed.

The party now instead has its eyes set on the 2025 general election.

Williams said, “We speak of political corruption and dealing with crime, white or black criminality but to get rid of one PNM party in 2023 in a local government election not a general, many citizens have forgotten the past of red and yellow once again supporting failed leaders and corruption in the PNM and UNC.”

He said, “Because of race or love for political leader and party, once again forgetting country, community, children, families and self-respect, losing thousands of voters in today’s elections, will see PNM hold more seats or  see  PNM hold on to their same seats.”

Williams said, “The Democratic Front will be ready for the 2025 general elections as our manifesto to rebuild our country, communities and citizen Trinbgonians lives will be out soon, we call on all citizens to join the real movement.”

He said leaders of other political parties did not have any real plans for the development of the nation.

Williams lamented that the voter turn-out was way too low which resulted in the PNM win.

The Point Fortin Borough Corporation was contested by both the PNM and the UNC, the National Transformation Alliance (NTA) – in accommodation with the UNC, the Progressive Empowerment Party (PEP), the Movement for Social Justice (MSJ) and one  independent candidate for Warden Road/ Hollywood Irvin Felix.

The results for the Point Fortin Borough Corporation were:

Mahaica/New Lands Village:

PNM – 581

NTA – 160

PEP – 51

New Village

PNM – 546

UNC – 91

PEP – 49

MSJ – 45

Egypt Village

PNM – 674

NTA – 211

PEP – 94

Warden Road/ Hollywood

PNM – 541

MSJ – 30

For Point Fortin, even if all the other votes were combined, it still would not have been enough  for the PNM not to win.
