A new species of the Hummingbird has been found in Trinidad.

It was discovered by Theodore Ferguson of Yerettê, Home of the Hummingbird, Maracas Valley, St Joseph, Trinidad.

He said he was at his hummingbird attraction on October 8 when he saw a “strange” bird in his garden and “after investigating it for a while, I realised that it was something I have never seen before.

“I proceeded to get the photographic evidence to document it and see what it can be.”

He said after sharing it with both local and foreign experts, it was confirmed to be the Glittering-throated Emerald –  Amazilia fimbriata.

Ferguson said this was the second new species to be found in Trinidad in recent years with the Amethyst woodstar – Calliphlox amethystine being discovered in 2015.

Ferguson said there were now 19 species of hummingbirds in Trinidad and about 350 worldwide.

He said Trinidad has the most number of species among the Caribbean countries.

Ferguson said there were now 15 species of hummingbirds at his attraction.

According to its website, Yerettê is located in lush Maracas Valley of the Northern Range and “provides an opportunity for visitors to get an in-depth experience of the magic of the smallest of birds up close and personal.

“Visitors experience hummingbirds in their hundreds, and often in their thousands, throughout the year.”
