THERE has been an increase in Covid-19 fatalities in the 80 and over age group in Trinidad and Tobago.

This according to epidemiologist Dr Avery Hinds speaking at the Ministry of Health virtual presser on Wednesday.

Dr Hinds highlighted that the 80 to 85 and over group is beginning to occupy a larger and larger percentage of Covid-19 related deaths.

He said, “The balance of male to female went from 75%, in early March to now about 60% male and 40% female.

“Cases in the over 60 age group have been steadily increasing over the past month.”

He added, “As we get more of the older community affected, the probability of having an adverse outcome is higher.”

Geographic Information Systems Manager at the Ministry of Health Roshan Seeramsingh revealed that in some communities, there were over 50 cases being reported.

Seeramsingh highlighted that between May 23 and June 5 which are weeks 21 and 22 respectively, “The majority of communities across Trinidad remain affected, with several communities in the East West Corridor as well as some in Sangre Grande and some in Central recording very high number of cases.”

Referring to weeks 22 and 23, “While majority of communities continue to record cases, we are seeing less communities recording that over 50 mark.”

Seeramsingh said, “Less communities are recording in that particular mark which is a good sign, which represents a downward trend,”

He said County Caroni showed a few decreases with some cases scattered across the county between week 22 and 23.

Seeramsingh said, “In St George Central, there were several unidentifiable trends in terms of increases or decreases.

“There were several areas showing decreases in the lower central part of County St George Central, with just one area showing signs of an upward trend. While in St. George East, there is a downward trend with no unidentifiable trend, except in one area which there is an upward trend.”
