MINISTER of Labour Stephen Mc Clashie says he does not have any power in the firing of 468 employees of the Telecommunication Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT).

Mc Clashie in Parliament on Friday said he was instead a third party in the entire matter.

The minister was asked by Member of Parliament for Oropouche East Dr Roodal Moonilal if an investigation was launched concerning the contravention of section 18 of the Retrenchment and Severance Benefits Act, Chap. 88:13 by TSTT through the issuance of termination notices to the employees who were notified of their termination this week.

Mc Clashie responded that Section 18 of the Retrenchment and Severance Benefit Act 88:13 and the Retrenchment Act as a whole did not confer investigative powers upon the minister.

He said, “The Minister of Labour is a neutral third party and in the event of a breach or alleged breach, the recognised majority union, through its association will report such breaches to the Minister of Labour pursuant to the provisions of Section 51:1 of the Industrial Relations Act chapter 88:01, where the minister, through a specialist staff will bring the parties together for conciliatory talks with the view of seeking an amicable resolution. So we do not have any power in this matter.”

The 468 terminated employees will continue to work until June 14, when the court decides if TSTT was lawful in issuing the notices in the manner that they did.
