THE chairman of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) is the United National Congress (UNC) candidate for Debe South.

Khemraj Sunil Seecharan was given the nod by the party’s screening committee and will contest the bye-election on February 7. Nomination day is on Monday.

The People’s National Movement has chosen Judy Sookdeo to contest the seat that became vacant with the passing of then councillor Purshottam Singh last year.

According to a release from the UNC, Seecharan was born and raised in Debe South.

It stated, “He is an enterprising and determined young man with a passion for people, community and culture, coming from a family that was always involved in community building and development.

“He was the founding Chairman of the Penal Debe Foundation – a nationally recognised NGO advocating for disaster mitigation and championing disaster and community relief. Khemraj’s mantra is ‘Together We Can’.’”
