ALTHOUGH Trinidad and Tobago would not have any international observers for Monday’s general elections, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is calling on citizens to be “national observers.”
She made the call during a United National Congress (UNC) virtual campaign meeting on Thursday.
Persad-Bissessar had repeatedly called for international observers to ensure a fair election but Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley had said it would be too costly to have at this time.
Persad-Bissessar said, “I have absolute confidence in the citizens of our beloved nation and today I call for national observers. I nominate every citizen as a national observer to record everything. Be a national observer, tape them vandalising banner and posters, tape them removing garbage bins people put in to help people, tape them in every irregularity that you see. Each one of us can become a national observer for general election 2020.”

During the 2015 General Election, the Commonwealth Observer group was present in the country to scrutinise the election proceedings. Citizens were praised then by the group for the “peaceful and orderly manner in which they exercised their right to vote.”
Persad-Bissessar called on supporters to wear their masks and go early to vote to avoid delays that may occur due to policies put in place at polling stations to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
Special voting has already begun on Monday and will continue until Sunday, the day before the general election.
