AN Opposition MP is claiming that the People’s National Movement (PNM) government wants to jail a sitting high court judge.

The allegation was made by Oropouche East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal at the United National Congress (UNC) Monday Night Forum at the Aranguez North Secondary School.

Speaking before a packed school auditorium, Dr Moonilal said, “There is now information that has come to us, very serious and credible information that (Prime Minister Dr) Keith Rowley and his government are involved in a conspiracy, in a plot to lock up a high court judge.

“There is a high court judge today who apparently when he makes his ruling and so on, he makes statements critical of the government, critical of the administration, ministries and so on and in his rulings, he is making statements which show the government in a bad light.”

On Monday evening, said, “We are told that a special squad of police officers –two or three – have been assigned to find, build and fabricate a case against a high court judge because of his rulings and his statements against the government.

“And let me tell you something, this is the same PNM that tried to jail (the late) Sat Sharma, the chief justice of Trinidad and Tobago.

“So this is not beyond them. A high court judge is now in the firing line and in the days to come you will see certain issues unfolding where they are trying to lock him up on frivolous matters, very frivolous, whether he using blue light or green light or red light and siren and so on that kind of thing, but other matter as well.”

Dr Moonilal said, “They are trying to lock him up because of his statements from the Bench, that he makes statements critical of the Government.

“And when you have reached a stage like this, your country is collapsing. The rule of law is in danger. The judiciary is in danger.”
