LOOKING at the leadership style of Dr Keith Rowley we notice he has shown toxic behaviour the many times he interacts with the Opposition and in some cases the media.

His minister of finance has taken a pattern from him and relishes the arrogant behaviour in question and answer sessions in Parliament. No one can question him about anything he does and he claims he always acts responsibly and expects any right-thinking citizen to turn a blind eye and accept his flimsy explanations. He maintains that is the way it’s done in conducting the people’s business. He side steps questions, belittles opposition members of parliament in giving his answers and believes that the country will generally accept his disdainful responses. It’s apparent to citizens now that the way he conducts the affairs of his ministry apparently appears to benefit himself, his family and his cohorts most of the time. Toxic leadership is a style that is destructive to the team and the overall cabinet. It’s an egomaniacal abuse of power on the part of the leader. Under toxic leadership, it’s difficult for the country and your peers to thrive. A toxic leader normally has his own self-interest at heart.

That’s why Nazma Muller’s placard in front of parliament on budget day was so poignant– “Imbert HYMC” – it is one for the ages. This expresses the pain of the common man across the land we call sweet T&T. Under this minister of finance’s stewardship everything seems to be failing, closing down or in disrepair. Higher unemployment rates are the norm in our economic atmosphere. In fact, we have experienced one of our highest unemployment rates since the 1980s recession upon the closure of Petrotrin and under the Rowley’s Government.

The spiraling economy has had a downward impact as the GDP reduction continues to go downhill, as production power is reduced and importation bills continue to get higher. We are seeing an increase in food prices rampant throughout T&T, where flour, chicken, eggs and basic commodities have increased 30% to 40% in the last six months. Now fuel prices at the pump are out of hand with the fuel price hike. What used to cost $300 to fill up a tank now costs $500. Where are we going? The forex and its unavailability is a major issue and has been affecting businesses throughout the islands. Everyone is on the edge.

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, in a recent interview labelled the frustration on the ground by the people as simply “misbehaving.” Dr Rowley believes he and his Government had gotten it right with this budget and the problem is that the population doesn’t understand the “great job” and “sacrifices” they have untaken for citizens’ benefits.

The prime minister is the one that is not understanding the sheer disgust of the population and hubris of his ministers and Members of Parliament.

People are just fed up and that’s why Muller’s placard just sums it up in one poignant phase captured for all times.

Citizens can’t make their monthly commitments to banks and all the average man on the street sees are more hard times. There are no practical plans to target the crime epidemic, to get food prices down or to get fuel prices at a manageable cost.

The finance minister has lost all touch with the citizens and under his stewardship it seems unacceptable again that the responses from the ministers using their technic of deflection, deception, and pointing your finger at your opponent is no longer the way to get out of anything.

The people are fed up with the same old politics and how it works here, that no one questions the boss. They are not tolerating this anymore and the evasive way the PNM Ministers account on the people’s purse. That’s why one opposition member of parliament asked the aloft Minister Imbert “HYMC” – how you are managing the country!
