MINISTER of National Security Fitzgerald Hinds says he does not know why lifeguards at four main beach facilities did not work over the weekend.

Hinds is the line minister for the lifeguards.

He said at Maracas Bay, lifeguards returned to duty on Monday.

In Parliament on Tuesday, Hinds was asked what was the reason for the walk-out by Member of Parliament for Pointe-a-Pierre David Lee.

He replied, “Quite frankly, I am unable to say.”

Hinds continued that it was not uncommon for lifeguards to walk off duty.

He said, “The fact that they returned to work Monday demonstrates they choose weekends especially long and holiday weekends like Easter, so that what they do, would have more adverse impact on the population who wants to use these beaches and to create public outrage and outcry and to get the echo chambers from my friends on the other side in the media to perpetrate their thing.”

Hinds said resources continue to be provided for the lifeguards and it was expected of them to do continue doing their duties in their protection of the public.

The Ministry of Tourism had advised citizens that there were no lifeguards at the beach facilities at Maracas, Vessigny, Las Cuevas and Manzanilla until further notice.
