THE Government of Trinidad and Tobago will be feeding families who are gravely affected by the lockdown measures announced on Friday.

At a press conference on Friday, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said measures will be in place to assist persons who were struggling to keep “body and soul together” making a clear distinction that assistance would not be given to persons to maintain certain lifestyles.

Dr Rowley said, “The Government’s responsibility here is to try and ensure that as far as it is feasible to identify the qualified persons and to ensure that families are fed at a reasonable level and that those persons who are at the lowest end of the economic scale who would have been jolted by this intervention to protect the rest of us and themselves, that they get the assistance of the taxpayer in some form of assistance.”

He said Finance Minister Colm Imbert was expected to speak to the country on Monday and the qualifications of such individuals will be published by Tuesday so that persons will be able to receive their assistance “ largely towards sustenance.”

“We are hoping that this kind of intervention does not last too long,” Dr Rowley added.
