WASHINGTON – DONALD TRUMP has become the third United States President to be impeached by the House of Representatives.

He goes down in the history books with Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton and is highly unlikely to be forced out of office since the Republicans have the majority in the US Senate where the impeachment will go to trial in the New Year.

Around 8.30 p.m. local time on Wednesday, the House called for votes on two charges, namely – abuse of power, for Trumps’s attempt to pressure Ukraine to announce investigations into his Democratic political rival Joe Bided; and secondly, obstruction of Congress because he is alleged to have refused to co-operate with the impeachment inquiry by withholding documentary evidence and stopping his key aides from giving evidence.

The vote as expected fell along partisan lines as 229 Democrats voted for the charge and 195 Republicans against it.
