A spike in corona virus cases in Victoria, Australia, has forced authorities to declare a state of disaster and impose new lockdown measures.

According to the BBC, the restrictions come into effect at 6pm on Sunday and would see Melbourne residents subject to a night-time curfew and the city’s stay-at-home order enhanced, giving them fewer exemptions for leaving home.

Residents will not be permitted to travel more than 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) from their home, exercise will be restricted to once a day, and only one person will be able to go shopping for essentials at a time.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said the changes to lockdown rules announced on Sunday will remain in place until at least September 13.

He assured that police would be given additional powers to ensure these rules are observed.
