IN two days, Justice Dennis Morrison and Gregory Wilson are expected to receive their instruments of appointment for the Commission of Enquiry into the deaths of the four underwater divers in February.

This is according to Acting Prime Minister Colm Imbert who was responding to questions during the Prime Minister Questions in Parliament on Wednesday.

Imbert was asked for an update on the deaths of Rishi Nagassar, Fyzal Kurban, Yusuf Henry and Kazim Ali Jr who were sucked into a pipeline belonging to Paria Fuel Trading Company while doing work to repair a leak.

He said Morrison and Wilson will also be meeting with the counsel to the commission attorney Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, SC.

“The terms of reference for the enquiry have been settled and will be published shortly. It should be noted that the conduct of the enquiry will be the sole responsibility of the commissioners,” Imbert said.

Although, it was stated publicly, he repeated that a firm with specialised experts will act as independent consultants to the commission rather than the appointment of a third commissioner.

Imbert said, “The firm has not yet been procured but a search will be done using best practice to acquire a firm that would have the necessary specialist expertise.”

He added that Government will take advice from the commissioners and other advisors on the matter of the provision of legal representation to the families of the four divers who died.

When asked about the commencement date of the enquiry, Imbert replied, “I expect them to commence as soon as possible with dispatch.”
