THE bill to make wearing masks mandatory in public has been passed in the House of Representatives on Friday.
On Saturday, the bill will go to the Senate for debate.
Piloting the bill in the Parliament on Friday, Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi said recommendations were for first offenders to be charged $1000, second offenders $2000 and $5000 on third offence.
After a third offence, persons can also be arrested.
Opposition Leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar had said the Opposition would support such a bill but attention will be paid to the fine print.
The legislation has become necessary to enforce health and safety practices in Trinidad and Tobago in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said during the recent election campaign and promised that the legislation would have been one of the first items on his Government’s agenda in Parliament.
