HOSTS Trinidad and Tobago can steal a march on leaders Barbados when the third preliminary round of the Cricket West Indies Under-17 Regional Tournament gets underway today at three venues.
TT kept their two-match unbeaten record intact on Sunday when they defeated the Leeward Islands by six runs in a thrilling low-scoring encounter at Gilbert Park in California. On Saturday, TT beat Guyana by nine wickets in their opening match of the tournament at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva.
Front runners Barbados, also winners of their first two fixtures, against the Windward Islands on Saturday, and Guyana on Sunday top the standings with nine points. TT are next with 8.9 points with the Leewards a distant third on 4.7 points.
The TT boys, managed for the first time by Red Force senior team star Rayad Emrit and coached by Gregory Davis, were bowled out by the Leewards for a disappointing score of 91 in 35.4 overs and defied the odds by tumbling out their opponents for 89 in 32.3 overs.
On a day when the ball ruled the bat, Barbados restricted Guyana to 118 for seven wickets and in reply reached 120 for three to win by seven wickets at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba.
At the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva, the Windward Islands were restricted to 81 in 27.5 overs and Jamaica overhauled their target in reaching 86 for six wickets in 24.4 overs.
