THE Government extends the term of Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher by one year.
A release by the Office of the Prime Minister on Monday stated: “The Cabinet has today (May 13, 2024) advised the President, Her Excellency Christine Carla Kangaloo, O.R.T.T., under Section 75(a) of the Police Service Act, to extend the service of Mrs. Erla Harewood-Christopher in the office of Commissioner of Police, for a period of one (1) year with effect from May 15, 2024.”
Harewood-Christopher was appointed in February 2023 after being approved by the Parliament. She attained the age of 60 last May, and the Cabinet had also extended her contract by one year.
There have been more than 200 murders for the year thus far.
On Saturday, Harewood-Christopher avoided questions from the media at the 101st Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) Sport and Family Day on Saturday at the Police Training Academy, St James.
Last week, the Court of Appeal dismissed an appeal challenging the validity of Harewood-Christopher’s extension as top cop last year.
